Despite the economic downturn and continuing uncertainties in the tourism industry, consumer demand for responsible and sustainable tourism remains strong. This will give an overview of surveys from various countries about what consumers want and how much they are willing to pay.

This session will review a number of socially and environmentally responsible practices that are being used not only by ecolodges but, increasingly, by hotel chains, tour operators, outfitters and other sectors of the industry.

Understanding and using the travel press and Internet are increasingly important. This session will cover the nuts and bolts of how the travel press operates, what types of stories it covers, and how best to utilize the media, as well as trends in Internet usage and strategies for successful marketing.

Traveler’s Philanthropy: Getting The Traveler Involved
A number of tourism businesses are becoming involved in philanthropy – soliciting guest contributions to support community projects in host counties. This session will look at the range of types of what is being dubbed the “travelers philanthropy” movement and discuss why such programs make good social and business sense.
